World Environment Day is the United Nations day for encouraging worldwide awareness and action to protect our environment. It is the most renowned day for environmental action. Since 1974, it has been celebrated every year on 5th June: engaging governments, businesses, celebrities and citizens to focus their efforts on a pressing environmental issue.

The evidence for rapid climate change is compelling. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, has clearly stated that scientific evidence for the warming of the climate system is unequivocal.

That’s why we put the SDG no. 13 Climate Action at the heart of our strategy. In 2020, Netguru has obtained the B Corporation™ certificate, joining the community of over 3,200 companies in the world that have committed to developing a sustainable economy model. The condition of certification is not only the declaration of actions. The application process requires companies to present documents that confirm the results of ongoing initiatives and their long-term nature as part of the company’s business strategy.

B Corp™ qualifies Netguru as a service with a minor environmental footprint. Being remote-friendly in the first place, with only around 5% of our team conducting a significant amount of travel, our CO2 emissions are limited. We stand by the mission of the B Corp™ movement about using business as a force for good – that’s why we decided to join the global efforts in addressing climate change with what we do best: technology. As part of the Tech for Good initiative, Netguru openly supports NGOs and environmental protection digital solutions through pro-bono and low-bono activities.

Helping Pure Earth fight pollution

Back in 2019, we launched the R&D for Good program with the first project aimed at fighting pollution. Pure Earth is an NGO that, for the last 20 years, has been solving pollution problems in low and middle-income countries. Our role was to help them create Report Pollution: an app designed to document and report polluted sites that users have direct contact with. Report Pollution aims to become a platform for underrepresented communities and to help them inspire others to take action and raise awareness. Find out more

Netguru x Coalition for Rainforest Nations

In December 2019 Netguru partnered with Coalition for Rainforest Nations. Together with The Coalition, we launched REDD.plus, the first platform to provide a central registry and exchange for RRU credits. This is a milestone achievement in scaling up the fight to reduce carbon emissions, and we’re proud that our team has been instrumental in this initiative.

Climate Leadership in Poland

We have also helped the United Nations Environmental Program in Poland (UNEP/GRID) in adopting a communication platform that enables businesses to consult their climate commitments with experts and undertake measurable actions against climate change.

At the end of 2019, Netguru developed an internal framework for sustainable development, in which we have made a commitment to the following UN Sustainable Development Goals: 9, 10, 11 and 13. Our sustainability ambition is to build around the 13th Sustainable Development Goal: Climate Action, among others.

Not only do we get involved in environmental actions on the company level but also many of our employees care for the environment on a daily basis by:

  • reducing/dropping meat and other animal products in their diet;
  • bringing their own bags for vegetables instead of grabbing more plastic bags at shops;
  • drinking tap-water instead of buying plastic bottles;
  • using a carbonator instead of buying bottled sparkling water;
  • using shampoo bars (sold in paper boxes/bags) instead of shampoo sold in plastic bottles;
  • buying second-hand clothes and toys;
  • trying to buy food products in recyclable packaging;
  • using cosmetics in glass containers;
  • reducing the water consumption when taking a shower (it amounts to around 40-percent reduction of water use);
  • focusing on quality rather than quantity when shopping;
  • buying locally and supporting locally owned businesses.

We want to continue cooperating with purpose-driven organizations and spearheading solutions for environmental challenges.
